KAREN SKIPPER CRUCE

Artist Statement

“Over the past 20 years of working in ceramics, I have grown to realize the importance of each piece being well-crafted.  That, as a functional potter, became my main focus.  Along the way, I discovered that the inspiration for my finished work came from the earth – it’s processes,  textures  and color. The earth provides endless inspiration and a fabulous color palette found in canyon walls, swiftly moving waters, landscapes, the earth’s horizon at sunrise and dusk, geyser pools – the list never ends and is never boring.  In fact, it is short of miraculous. ”

Background & Bio

Born and raised in Houston, Texas by a teacher mom and journalist/cartoonist dad. After college I took the first job offer in Seattle in the finance field. I thought this would be a short gig and I would return to my first love, Geology. Fast forward 23 years when I retired as a financial advisor and opened my own business as a potter. I now own one of the most successful pottery teaching facilities in Houston with 80+ students. I enjoy passing this art form to the younger generation. I was named one of the 50 best potters in the U.S. in 2007.
